What I Do

I design websites for freelance writers, speakers, coaches, and others.

Just about any freelancer who depends on their website to generate sales. So what’s the trick to more clients and more income? That’s easy.

Tell a story.

The best way to keep customers on your website (and thus more likely to buy from you) is to create a story that pulls them from the top of the page to the bottom. A story so good, they can’t stop reading.

What’s My ROI?

Sally Collings

“Within 8 days of launching my one page story website, I signed a new client who paid $100,000 for my writing and publishing services. All thanks to Latham’s focused design and sales copy.”

My Story

I’m Latham Shinder, founder of Story Websites, and a full-time writer and website designer.

I currently live in the small mountain town of Breckenridge, Colorado, thus all the winter photography.

I’m a big believer in the story website, and here’s why.

Several years ago, when I was first getting my writing business off the ground, I designed a traditional website to attract customers. Lots of pages, lots of jazzy content. I then spent a little money on Google AdWords advertising. For several months, I got zilch. No phone calls. No paying clients.

So I designed another site and tested it with more advertising.

And another.

And another, and well, you get the point. I must have created a dozen websites with all kinds of crazy layouts, fonts, images, colors, and oodles of pages. And not a single one of them led to a paying client.

At this point, I had nothing to lose, so I created a super focused, one page website that told a story.

Everyone said it wouldn’t work. It was too long, they said. Too many words on the page. Too much white space. Too simple.

It used only a single font and a single color, red.

Only . . . it did work.

That story website has since generated well over a million dollars in sales—the fees people pay me to help write and edit their books.

How I Do What I Do

Look, of course your website must make a big promise . . .

. . . and solve a clear problem, and identify your audience, and explain who you are, and what you do, and how you do it, and list features and benefits, and include testimonials from happy customers, and explain your pricing, and make a compelling offer, and finally include a call to action.

I’ve just laid out the 11-step formula for selling any product or service to any customer in the world.

In fact, if you follow this formula for your website design, I can promise you’ll double or triple sales this year.

Of course your website must do all of these things, but first it must do one thing . . .

. . . hold your reader’s attention long enough to explain all that other stuff.

And telling a story is the most powerful tool I know of for holding reader attention.

Features & Benefits

A story website hooks your customers and keeps them engaged.

Here’s how.

  • Memorable Stories

I present your product, your passion, and your experience in the form of a story—a straightforward narrative that appeals directly to your customers.

  • Eye-Catching Images

First impressions matter. The main image of a story website, for example, must be dazzling. The look and feel of this single photo hooks your audience into your story enticing them to scroll down the page. When they do, we got ’em.

  • Linear Layout

A story website organizes information using a top-down layout, showing customers only the information they need when they need it to make a buying decision.

  • Narrow Audience

A story encourages you to speak to a specific, well-defined audiencea small group of devoted people genuinely interested in what you’re selling.

  • Fewer Distractions

And finally, I get rid of unnecessary buttons, fonts, and colors. I minimize links. I delete all the boring sales copy. Basically, I eliminate all the reasons to bounce to another page or website.

By the way, the story website I mentioned earlier—the one I created for my writing business—I still use that page today.

In fact, that single page has generated 100 percent of my writing income for the last seven years.

No agents. No referrals. No social media connections.

When I want a client, I turn on my ads and run a little traffic to the page. Then I pull up a chair and wait for the phone to ring.

If your marketing efforts are any more complicated, you’re working way too hard.

My advice: Update your website design.

Or better, create an entirely new story website design and test it against your old site. See for yourself which page gets the results you want.
